The Q

As I looked, a stormy wind came out of the north, and a great cloud, with brightness round about it, and from the midst of it came the likeness of 'fanzines'. And this was their appearance: they had sheets of paper, and each of them had cybernetic wings. Their looks were similar, and on their sides they touched one another; they went every one straight forward, without hesitating as they went. As for their likeness, each had something of the one in front; they all had the Q on their side.

And when I saw them, I heard a voice speaking: "There is a Foreign Body in our midst. All are welcome." And when it spoke, it entered into me and set me upon my feet. And it said to me, "I send you to people who are stubborn. And whether they hear or refuse to hear, be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks."

And when I looked, a fanzine was before me; and it had writing on the front and on the back, and there was written on it: "Copy and distribute." And I opened my mouth to eat the text. The words said to me, "You are sent to many peoples of foreign speech and hard languages, peoples whose words it is difficult to understand. But look, I have made your face hard against their faces, and your forehead hard against their foreheads. Fear them not."

Ich werde etwas Anderes fragen. Nicht etwa nach Preis, Herausgeberschaft, Entstehungsgeschichte; nicht nach Politik, Universität oder Kultur: nicht nach manch Anderem. Was verspricht dieser Titel? Ich wurde von einem Anrufbeantworter gerufen: sehen wir jenes Q graphisch als Wählscheibe. Ich erhielt einen Anruf.

"Ich werde also von einem Buchstaben sprechen": Vom 'Q'. Vorwegnehmen sollte man vielleicht, daß hier das Spiel mit diesem Buchstaben so weit getrieben werden soll, wie es nur geht. Es geht jedoch immer noch weiter. Es ist eine Strategie ohne Finalität, die diesen Buchstaben, dieses eine Zeichen unendlichen Leseweisen öffnen möchte. Gleichwohl sind die verschiedenen Qs nicht simultan gegenwärtig, sondern zugänglich nur indirekt durch verzögernde Vermittlungen und Umwege. Andererseits sind die Qs nie identisch, jedes Q ist ein anderes. In der Wiederholung, in der Distanz, in dieser Verräumlichung liegt die Dynamik dieses 'Q', aller Qs.

Ich werde also auf die Resonanz hören. Auf 'Cues'. Verschiedenste Qs sollen den Buchstaben explodieren, ihn in alle Richtungen ausleuchten. Es mag die Aussage genüügen, daß Q ein Zeichen ist, das in seiner Verschiedenheit von anderen auf Kontexte verweist, sowie auf eine unendliche Kette von Substitutionen. Ersatz-Qs, Versatzstücke. Doch was unterscheidet, was schiebt auf? Das Spiel beginnt mit dem delimitieren der Schreibweise, denn es geht nicht nur um Text. In zweifachem Gestus geht es immer auch um Sprache, um Sprechen und Hören. Doch über das Schreiben und Vokalisieren, das Graphem und das Phonem hinaus spielt hier ein Grammophon.

Ich werde also von Wahn&Witz schreiben. Über das Grammophon sprechen Stimmen zu uns, rhetorische und tropologische, doch vor allem innere, unhörbare, aufdringlich leise Stimmen. Es sind nicht die Stimmen der "gemeinen Sense"; dies sind vielmehr scheinbar verlorene Stimmen, fremde, heterogene, unreduzierbare. Zur Sprache jedoch kommt hier trotz aller Widerstände nicht etwa Unaussprechliches: Im Folgenden bietet Foreign Body Texte an, die sich mit "Literatur" beschäftigen, aber auch mit dem, was Literatur und ihr Studium konstituiert. Man möge entschuldigen: 'Fremdkörper' werden hie und da ein Wörtchen mitreden. Wer könnte sie hindern? Ich höre aber auch andere Stimmen. Sie halten für wahnsinnig, was hier unternommen wird. Doch für herkömmliche Weisen, über Literatur zu reden, ist es bereits zu spät. Auch für The Q ist es, strenggenommen, immer schon zu spät.

Ich werde also von Unzeitigkeit reden. Und davon, daß diese Essays, diese männlichen und weiblichen und sachlichen Artikel hinter den soeben aufgestellten Vorstellungen zurückbleiben werden, sie unterlaufen oder untergraben werden, ihnen vorauseilen oder ihnen überhaupt fernbleiben. Dennoch haben sie sich hier versammelt, um zum Lesen zu führen. Zum Lesen nicht nur von 'kompetenten' Spekulationen auf Englisch, sondern von so manch anderem, was sich uns sonst an Text bietet, durch die Jahrtausende, aber auch über heute hinaus. Für viele mag es spät sein, manchen verfrüht vorkommen: ich werde aber dennoch an die nächsten Ausgabe denken.

Ich werde also, damit sie zustande kommt, von der nächsten Ausgabe schreiben. Foreign Body war eine Kopiervorlage, verteilt in mehreren Ländern. Mittlerweile wird dies sich aufgelöst haben in - ja, in was ? "Ich werde also von etwas anderem reden." And moreover the words said,

"All of you shall go with the virus and speak and write. For we are nothing but what you can read and understand; I hope you will understand fully, as you have understood in part, that you can be proud of us as we can be of you. Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or from you? You yourself are our letter of recommendation, to be known and read by all; such is the confidence that we have. Not that we are to claim anything as coming from us; for it is precept upon precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little."

And then all the wise men came in. The wise men had been brought in before; however, they could not show the matter. Alien, heterogeneous, in any case irreducible to anything but the experience of the impossible (and not of that mute vision which seems to orient all of this apocalyptic apophatics, including the rhetoric which prepares its way), the announcement of difference or of "foreign body" would have little affinity with those well-known statements of a certain early Wittgenstein, such as: "Es gibt allerdings Unaussprechliches" (6.522) or "Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muß man schweigen" (7).

All this accounted for, still an excellent knowledge and understanding and the faculty to to interpret and explain were found in readers. Let them be called again: There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and Foreign Body shall be a foreigner to the reader and the speaker a foreigner to you. "By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners I will speak to the people."

And if, therefore, Foreign Body speaks in tongues, will they not say that this is mad? But when all is read, the remains of this text will be swallowed; and readers will begin to declare that yes indeed, Foreign Body has already been among us all this time. Tempus enim prope est.
